The Riot Before

it has been a busy month or two for me in the studio, but i am just about wrapped up on one of the most ambitious records i've ever gotten the pleasure of working on for The Riot Before's new LP "Rebellion", soon to be out on the amazing Paper+Plastick Records!

before Christmas, the band got in touch with me with a challenging concept and layout that really spoke to me personally. Dostoyevsky wrote once that "One can hardly live in Rebellion, and I want to live." In punk rock, rebellion and discontent are valid vessels and outlets, but it too often doubles as a limiting cause and effect. As we grow up, and begin to learn how the world works, and a desire to contribute to the world as well as shape it, it becomes more and more apparent that it is a restricting lifestyle with no growth or change, inwards or outwards. The band wanted a record that, utilizing die-cut windows, would appear almost as a punk rock cliche, but would open up to a more mature wider concept; one that would be a primer for the listener to understand the searching and crucial qualities to the music and lyrics. this would be a challenge conceptually, as well as in design, not to mention that it deals very much with things i think about regularly as i try and evolve and impact myself.

So first, i thought about ways to show variations on all these themes:

as i struggled to get a concept down first (knowing the layout and 'revealing' aspect of the record would come about after), i asked for lyrics to draw from (literally and figuratively) :

One thing the band liked was perhaps having the cover look like cliched iconography, like a rising fist, or a flag, only to open up to a larger more startling scene. so we took the idea of 'the flag of rebellion" and the potential aftermath being more destructive, while a lone figure attempts to build something greater from the rubble

so now we had what we wanted to say, but what about the cover? how could we lure the listener into thinking one thing, only to realize upon opening that it is about so much more?
we felt there was so much about rubble and building that perhaps we could have our typical flag, with a die-cut window that appeared crisp and pristine, among a weathered and cracking, but still upright, wall:

feeling we were headed in the right direction, the cover pencils and etched logo were created:

Thankfully, everyone in the band and label realized that this was not going to make for an interesting cover, and no matter how nice we made the inside jacket, we had to make the cover something people would want to pick up and open. so we pushed ourselves to find a better concept that might allude to the "before" to the inside's "after" :
so if the inside was hard actuality, perhaps the outside could be the optimistic passion:
and we roughed some logos for the band that might look good outside of the context of the record (which didn't quite come together yet):

finally, combining ideas together, i executed the final front & back covers.

(please click to see the larger art!)

then the inside! this record was SUCH a fun challenge; i loved every second of the process. i really had to push myself to think about and design every aspect of 4 panels all at the same time, to make sure it all lined up, or else our concept and window reveals wouldn't work. here, the flag would be tattered, and the album name "rebellion" would change drastically in new context:

and the final watercolor painting

(please click to see the larger art!)

this is a mock up of what the final 12" LP cover will look like in your hands :

and 12" records have to have cool labels. the vinyl junkie in me couldn't resist asking Paper+Plastick what they had in mind for the actual vinyl itself, and i think everybody's going to be blown away when they see the multiple variations (including blue and white swirled vinyl, as well as orange with red splatter!)

now for the insert! the record itself would be housed in a nice sleeve, and the band thought it would be cool to see a blueprint, continuing the idea that our central figure would still plan to build out of hope from the ashes. placing a lot of words in finite space is always tricky, but once i figured out how to get everything into 2 square feet, i began the laborious but incredibly important touch of doing all the type by hand. i am embarrassed to tell you that this may have taken me as long as the paintings to do, and while there were a great many long days and late nights--all gratifying--working on this album, my hand had to take a lot of breaks and i even iced down my wrist one night:
but what an outcome! i regret nothing! i took a lot of attention creating folds and crinkles from scans and playing in photoshop to divide each song and section as if it were folds on the blueprint, and hiding actual architectural drawings (like stairs) behind

i can't WAIT to see the final product. rest assured i will post photos when i get it. i am so grateful to have gotten to work on such a creative and ambitious record, not to mention the joy of doing exactly what i love doing the most -- every aspect of elaborately designed LPs! just as important is how thankful i am to work with such amazing, nice, and like minded friends in both the band and the record label. and did i mention...The Riot Before rock?!? this record is going to be incredible, all bias aside.

thank you for bearing with my lengthy process blog, but i was really proud to work on this one

take care
-peter

Pnut Jewelry!

i am always saying how lucky i am to have the amazing family and friends that i do. some occasions, grateful as i am, i question if everyone simply gravitates towards that kind of wondrous subjectivity, but then i think about all the people in my life that i am in awe of and beyond words expressing how happy i am to know them. i wonder if anyone feels that way about their clients? it's certainly an argument for staying true to the kind of work you want to do and people you want to work with. i certainly seem to know, and work for & with, the nicest people out there, hands down.

one such client, collaborator, and temporary boss, is Rusty Pitachio, guitarist of legendary NY punk/hardcore group H20, and also Pnut Jewelry! click HERE to see the amazing jewelry he makes, not to mention the great press and famous folks who rock his well crafted adornments!

Rusty found me by way of the incredible Danielle of Vegan Treats Bakery (home of "life-changing desserts", and 8th wonder of the world) and he wanted a new look to brand his web site and business cards based on vintage mechanical, as well as classic botanical, illustrations.

we went through a lot of reference and a lot of fonts (as i believe in options and fine tuning to help realize and craft someone's vision). it was a little, well, intimidating for me to illustrate Rusty's work because, frankly, the photos speak for themselves and the quality work he does.

at first we tried these (please click for a larger view):

then we cleaned things up a bit:

and made our way towards something that could've fallen out of ol' Charles Darwin's sketchbook (that'd be wishful thinking on my part):

it was a lot of fun for me as we worked on the functional, informative parts of the card:

and finally...the final! Rusty found a printer who makes some uniquely shaped and cut business cards. be sure to check out http://pnutjewelry.com/ in the future for new jewelry (and web!) designs

Dave Sommers Benefit

Recently our friend Dave Sommers, of the amazing Philly band CLOUD MINDER, has been going through a lot of surgeries and treatments to battle a serious brain tumor. to help him and his family with the costs, On December 18th, i was proud to contribute some artwork for silent auction during his benefit concert in Philly.

it was an amazing turnout; folks gave a lot of themselves in many ways, and to date, over $3,000 was raised!
here's Dave with our good friend, amazing artist & musician, Bob Stokes III (great photos taken by Philadelphia photographer Gene Smirnov)

good news: you can help too! right now, when you visit Anthropic Records, or HERE, you can make a donation (pay anything you want, no donation too small ! ) and download music from Cloud Minder (click to hear)! The site is completely secure and you get the entire first Cloud Minder album, "The Territory of this Contract is the Universe", for your donation.

"I hope the exit is joyful - and I hope never to return"

this painting was done for the Autumn Society's show celebrating "Dia De Los Muertos" at Philadelphia's Proximity Gallery (2434 East Dauphin Street!) October 1st - November 1st

feel free to click for a larger view!

i also burned/carved into a frame for the piece

the piece came a bit from a lot of sources. one is the Catrinas of Mexico, which are elegant female skeletal figures intended to show that the rich and fashionable, despite their pretensions to importance, are just as susceptible to death as anyone else is. i like how a "king may go through the progress through the guts of a beggar" from Hamlet illustrating death as the great equalizer. my disdain for celebrity worship and the upsetting things popular culture and the media often celebrates were the impetus here

Octavio Paz observes that, undaunted by death, the Mexican has no qualms about getting up close and personal with death, noting that he "...chases after it, mocks it, courts it, hugs it, sleeps with it; it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love." even old samurai thought upon death just enough to find peace with it, however and whenever it came. my favorite is when my Dad coined the term "Miracle of Death" that coincides alongside the Miracle of Life. that would be something i would love to touch upon artistically someday

for now, the show should be a fun one. happy holiday!

Coco Chanel

wow, what a day

Alarmcaster !

Philadelphia's Alarmcaster started off as 'friends of a friend' and quickly became 'friends'. we weren't sure if i could achieve the look they wanted at first, but we chipped away at it until the band was really excited about it, which of course is the best result i could hope for. Keats was a really super guy to work with and was terrific about the whole collaborative process. This awesome blistering CD is getting hand screen-printed on eco-friendly cardboard by the talented folks at Sire Press

concept thumbnails:

i really liked this next direction, and were getting close and feeling better, but not quite

The Final (click for larger looks if you like!) :

I 'heart' Harlem

moving to NYC and Harlem in Manhattan has been incredible so far, and thanks to an amazing support system of friends here, the enthusiasm of family, and of course Sarah Daisy Baugh as the best partner you could ask for in any adventure, it's hard to believe we've already/only been here for one third of a year!

the neighborhood and community has been wonderful, and we must be assimilating well as neighbors because I have already helped out two local Harlem entrepreneurs!

this photo is of a possible new club that may be opening, who needed a simple realistic logo of a leopard to get the branding rolling

this led to working with Harlem's historic jazz club the Lenox Lounge, a 70 year old institution like the Apollo Theater. They needed a new logo and updated menus to go along with their famous Zebra Room! I was very grateful and excited to work for such a local landmark

Augustus : viva la vinyl!

just because it was quiet on the blog doesn't mean August was without activity! I hope to make amends with that with the next few posts

as always, feel free to click on the images for larger views

one fun LP i got to work on was for TN's amazing Blacklist Royals. It was fun to design and I hope came across classic and authentic. The LP comes with playing cards for a drinking game, so be sure to check it out when Paper+Plastick releases it
I am actually pretty proud of these labels for the 12". I hope it looks like an old LP you might find in someone else's attic
layouts are hard, and making a lot of type look nice is always a challenge, but hopefully I did the guys and their lyrics justice
next up was formatting a diecut LP for the band FUN. I can't take credit for the terrific artwork and design here, but setting up elaborately packaged colored vinyl is a pipe dream of mine and working with Paper + Plastick as well as Nettwerk records (sometimes while I was driving from NYC to Texas i might add!) put me on cloud 9
and did i mention....Adam Arcuragi's 2nd long player "I Am Become Joy" is out!?!?! now, between you me and the lamp post, the record doesn't officially come out on High Two records until September, but if you go and catch any of Adam's live shows now, you can put it on the Victrola in the atrium NOW! I can't tell you how VERY proud i am to have been a part of this record both sonically as well as artistically (the art for the CD, LP, and digital itunes and emusic versions all vary!). Adam came over and let me approve the test pressings, and bias aside, this is a gorgeous collection of songs that are so genuine and true i don't dare try and describe it (so click on his name and preview some tracks on myspace!)
